Inform your partner(s)

Picture
True or False?
One of the most important factors of sex is communication... TRUE.

Talking about sex with a partner involves discussing sexual health, what you want or need in order to be comfortable during sexual activity, your comfort level with your body, birth control, sti's, etc.

Before you become sexually active with someone, you should be able to talk openly and freely about your sexual relationship , if not, it may be a good idea to re-evaluate if that partner is a smart sex partner for you.

Tips for talking with your partner

Picture
1. Pick a neutral space to talk. Having "the talk" in the middle of sex don't count.
2. use "I" statements. For example, "I think it is important to talk about..."
Make sure the conversation is framed so that your expectations are clear. You don't want your partner to feel like you are criticizing their behavior.
3. Be clear on your boundaries. Make certain that you are clear on what you are comfortable with prior to talking with your partner.
4. Acknowledge any awkwardness. It's ok for things to feel weird. Talk them out.
5. Be funny. Sometimes humor will not be appropriate. But in a lot of conversations, t's fine to just keep things light with some laughter!
6. Expect the best! Don't be timid. Go into the conversation expecting a good outcome.
7. When talking about the hard stuff, highlight the good stuff too! Use positive and assertive statements to make your partner feel at ease and secure.
8. Communicate all the time. For some people, talking about sex, STIs, and HIV/AIDS can totally kill the mood. The thing is you HAVE to talk about sex and how to protect yourself.
